the why

Just a lil' insight as to the why I came home & what's going on with this body of mine! My body is going down a similar route as my mother's. Long story short: genetically modified food is like drinking poison for her - my body began mirroring in varying degrees. As missionaries, we eat most of our dinners at members of our congregations homes - a different home every night.  You eat whatever is placed in front of you because they are sacrificing their money & time to serve you.

After three months of serving in Aurora, my body was already taking a visible toll - but I ignored it because there are missionaries fighting tapeworms in Cambodia... I can handle Velveeta casseroles & hot dogs every night for dinner! When I headed down to Parker for my second assignment, because my my gut had already been injured for three months, my body began reacted badly to food that shouldn't have hurt it. My eyes would swell up every night (google "Rocky beat up", take away the blood & you've got me).  Skin patches began forming on my scalp, eyes, chin, cheeks, back, & torso (my gut essentially couldn't handle the crap in the food, so it dumps it onto another organ, our skin, to cleanse - essentially), & I was in the fetal position every night due to pain. Things got a little better for about 2.5 months, until I was in Westminster, hitting my seven month mark of being a missionary. My body began rejecting food that was fed to me from dinner, but I could keep in my organic food on my own time. This went on for about a month.  I scrambled to try & fix what I could on my own.  During this time, I got a UTI & the flu - which beat my body down even more when it was already down.  I was receiving promptings or signs from God that I should go home from my mission early, but I didn't want to hear that! That would dash my dream of three years to serve this mission! So.. I did the idiotic thing of shoving aside His counsel (I know, I know... just remember all the other times I was a smart cookie, alright?).

The Monday before I came home, it began rejecting all food. I progressively got weaker.  I couldn't keep anything down - not even my organic food.  My body was treating any food as poison.  It would come up within seconds of going in.  That week I was blacking out every five minutes and shaking really bad. I wasn't getting any nutrients, the only thing that stayed in this body of mine was H2O. I knew this was God whacking me over the head. I let go of my pride, I quit fighting His will & gave up mine. I prayed to know what it was He wanted me to do.  That Thursday at the temple, I received my answer.  I heard the clear words, "Let your body heal."  I knew I was going home, but I still didn't have peace - the thing I so desperately needed at this point. I notified my Mission President the next day & we arranged for me to go home the following day, Saturday. He gave me a priesthood blessing.  I received confirmation & peace that this was what needed to happen.

God let me know through prayer & individuals that I had served my full-time mission, not full-term, but that I had served full-time for the duration of what He intended for me from the beginning. I know everything happens for a reason, I have no idea why right now, but I'll know someday. I know I'm supposed to be home, even if it's not what I had planned.  I cherish my time I had to serve the Lord as a missionary for the people of Denver.  It brought me closer to Christ in ways I never imagined, & in ways that would I couldn't have obtained without serving. I can truly say He's my dearest friend after these short 8 months.

You know when you think you have things figured out - like really, really figured out? Like you're so sure, that you're ready to just go with life, grab everything & run with it? Then God throws you this curve-ball that has a big NOPE written across it in big red letters & smacks you in the forehead with it?  Yeah, me too.

E N D O W M E N T

I'm going to be endowed today - endowed with strength from our Heavenly Father.  Strength to overcome the destructive nature of our brother Satan.  Strength to endure to end.  Strength that will enable me return to His presence once more.

I don't deserve this love.  I don't deserve this perfect, heavenly, all-consuming love that is given so freely.

Have you ever had that one question for Heavenly Father you've always kept in your heart?  Ever since I was twelve, my question to God is "are you proud of me?".  I go to ask in prayer, and my mind bounces the question back like the same poles on magnets coming together.  I know He loves me unconditionally & that no matter what He loves me.  But my heart or mind, or both, resist the action of asking every time.

I know I'm not worthy of His admiration.  But that's what makes it so grand & beautiful.  Every time I ask, I'm drowned in His love.  There's no feeling like it. Perfect.  Heavenly.  His love is literally all-consuming.

I know this is what He'd have me do.  There's no place He'd rather me be.  I'm only beginning on this journey of complete dedication to my Savior.  It's more than intimidating, but I know through Him I can do it.

THIS SUNDAY'S MUSINGS

Because of my mother's dietary restrictions, she & my father share the same piece of broken bread of the sacrament.  How beautiful is that - to share this emblem of our Savior's atoning sacrifice with your eternal companion?  This sacred symbol of the ultimate, all-consuming, eternal love of Christ spiritually fills & feeds two souls.

Partaking of your own broken bread is not less-than or less spiritual, my mother simply cannot consume a whole bite of bread without serious physical consequences.  But her special circumstances brought a unique light that filled me with a special love today during the sacrament today.

SISTER GRAVES

She knows my heart better than anyone else on this earth. Tessa has lead me to our Savior by her counsel & example for the past five years. It's a peculiar thing when souls are friends - to know that our friendship extends beyond this life & continually strengthens one another's discipleship.  Heavenly Father knew I'd need Tessa to become who He wants me to be. I'm eternally grateful for her companionship.

The Lord will work incredible things through her in Omaha the next three months. I'll miss her the next 23 months of our lives as we both serve Him as missionaries in different parts of the world.  It feels as though my heart is being ripped out of my chest at times, but I know it will be full of some of the greatest blessings + experiences He has in store for us. It's so evident that this is exactly what Christ wants us to do with our lives at this time & it's going to be absolutely incredible!

7.4 JOURNAL

With my mission a hundred days away, I am reflecting more than I ever have.  I've never been the sentimental type - quite the opposite (ask any of my dearest friends, they'll attest wholeheartedly).  But for some reason as I think of the past seven years, of how much my heart & mind have consumed experiences to become who I am now, I'm overcome with closing this chapter of growth.

Reading the poetry that consumed me - both my writings, quickly jotted on napkins, and the ones written by classics & the unknowns - remind me of when I first began to see beauty in the details.  Listening to my playlists I had carefully curated to reflect my emotions precisely - lyrics & melodies bringing back the rawest of times.  Reading my journal entries of precious memories & plans to change the world in magnificent ways; entries of my testimony & the encounters I had with Christ that consumed my heart.  All the letters I wrote, but never had the confidence to gift to those who changed my life in so many ways.  Melodies jotted on scraggly staffs when words couldn't capture the moment.  Talks on faith highlighted, covered in notes.  Books I dog-eared too many times to count, rebound at the spine.  All these things document my transition of childhood to figuring out myself & my heart.  I'm leaving this state of growth with a heart so full.

The next 18 months will be an extreme time for the Lord to transform me one-on-one.  My weaknesses will be laid out & my strengths will be tested more than they ever have before.  The level of my obedience, diligence, and trustworthiness will be brought to light.

After my mission I'll be blessed to grow with the companion God has prepared for me, and that companionship will last through eternity.  This chapter I'm leaving is the last & only time of myself.  It's been truly beautiful.

I dearly love that younger Leah & the fact that she had no idea that that book, photographer, poem, or story would be the foundation of so many dreams, goals, plans, successes.  I'm proud of her.  Her decisions have brought inexpressible happiness to herself & others - and will continue to do so.

I guess I'm kind-of saying thank you to my younger self.  So.  No avoiding how painfully cheesy this is  -  thank you, Leah.  Thank you for being so stubborn that the only person who could change your mind was yourself (sometimes not even then).  Thank you for reading stories of the raw, dark places mankind has created in our history - it has driven so many goals to purge the world of them.  Thank you for surrounding yourself with the poetry,   stories,   and music that make you feel the deepest emotions; then having the courage to create your own.  Thank you for knowing yourself better than you may have believed at the time.  Thank you for trusting what you knew what you wanted, even when those you loved the most didn't believe you could - for never giving up.  Thank you for protecting your heart from the things that would have destroyed a part of your spirit & joy.  Thank you for relying on the Savior with all your might.  Thank you for always remaining steadfast with an eternal perspective.  Thank you for your eagerness & readiness to do what He would have you do.  Thank you for having the courage - pure insanity at times - to stand for what you knew to be true.

It astounds me to see how perfectly Christ knows me.  He placed people, stories, experiences at exactly the perfect times of vulnerability   and   strength.  Words can't express my love for Him & His goodness to me.  I can't wait to have this time of only doing exactly what He would have me do.  To be His servant completely.  There will be no time for myself.  He's given me 19 years to prepare for this.  I've missed a lot of opportunities to grow.  But I will utilize the ones I didn't miss & give Him my absolute all.
